Guest House International

Guest House International is one of Winnipeg's great hostels. It is a restored Victorian home, with private and semi-private rooms, kitchen facilities, laundry, air conditioning, games room, TV/VCR/Videos, BBQ, and Internet Access.

The owner and manager of Guest House International wants 2 students from the Languages at Work program to help with the large influx of guests that travel through Winnipeg during July and August. These employees will have the chance to meet, talk to, and tour Winnipeg with the many international guests that stay in this hostel.

Employee Profile:

An employee at Guest House International should be interested in travel and enjoy talking to new people.

Tasks:

  • Helping guests with check in
  • Socializing with the guests and helping provide tourist information to make them feel comfortable in Winnipeg
  • Helping with house maintenance and cleanliness

Location:

Guest House International is one bus ride (~10 min) away from downtown Winnipeg and the University of Winnipeg, or about a 30 min walk.

The Original Pancake House

The Original Pancake House is a fabulous Winnipeg restaurant that specializes in breakfast foods. There are 3 locations in Winnipeg, 2 of which are accepting students from the Languages at Work program for the summer.

Employee Profile:

The Original Pancake House is looking for 2-3 students who are friendly and outgoing; serving experience is an asset, but not necessary.

Tasks:

  • Greet customers and show them to a table
  • Take orders and serve drinks
  • Clear and prepare tables for customers
  • Assist customers at the cash register
  • Taking orders and serving food (for an employee with experience as a waiter/waitress)

Knox Day Nursery

Knox Day Nursery is a day care for children 3 months old to 6 years old. Some of the daily activities for the children include: music, rhythm games, songs, exercises, gross motor activities (i.e. crawling, rolling, climbing) and sensory stimulation using a variety of toys and activities.
Employee Profile:

The position requires a student who likes children and preferably have some experience working with 2-5 year olds.

Tasks:

The student will be actively involved in all aspects of the day, including:
  • Supervising all daily routines
  • Facilitating and extending play opportunities
  • Implementing planned and unplanned activities
  • Snack/meal preparation

Location:

Knox Day Nursery is a 5 min walk from the University of Winnipeg, and is close to a mall, a park, and many eating establishments.

Brave New World

Brave New World is a vibrant store located close to downtown Winnipeg. They import clothing, jewelry, and gifts from all around the world, and carry locally made products as well. The store supports a "No Sweat" policy, fair trade, and ethical business practices in developing countries!
There are 6 staff members at Brave New World, who are friendly, and eager to have one student from the Languages at Work program join them for the summer!


Employee Profile:

A Sales Assistant at Brave New World should be outgoing, interested in working in retail, and supportive of the "No Sweat" policies promoted by the store.
Tasks include:
  • Operating the cash register

  • Assisting customers with finding the right size/product they are looking for

  • Stocking and inventory

  • Assisting with managing the kiosk at special events throughout the city
Location:

Brave New World is about a 20 minute walk from the University of Winnipeg, or 1 short bus ride.
